Volkswagen Touareg survives missile blast in Ukraine, engine restarts

A third‑generation Volkswagen Touareg was parked near the epicenter of a ballistic missile explosion in Ukraine. The shockwave and shrapnel caused severe structural damage: the roof collapsed, pillars bent, most body panels deformed, all windows shattered, and the interior was covered in dust. The vehicle was empty at the time, so airbags did not deploy.

Despite the damage, the 3.0‑liter V6 turbo diesel engine started instantly when the driver pressed the keyless start button, and the SUV was driven away under its own power. The digital cockpit, climate‑control system, power‑seat controls and exterior lighting remained functional, although numerous warning lights indicated sensor failures. Ukrainian firm EMG Group posted videos of the incident on YouTube, noting that nearby luxury cars such as a Porsche Cayenne and a Bentley Bentayga were completely destroyed. Observers have suggested the damaged Touareg could become a museum piece.
