Volkswagen unveils 1,000‑hp Golf 8 R prototype, launches Golf and T‑Roc hybrids
Volkswagen Motorsport South Africa built a special Golf 8 R with a 2.5‑litre five‑cylinder turbo delivering 1,000 hp for hill‑climb racing. The prototype features a front‑mounted exhaust, extensive carbon‑fiber bodywork, reinforced drivetrain, AP Racing brakes and debuted at the Zwartkops hill‑climb event with driver Jonathan Mogotsiau, marking VW’s 75‑year presence in South Africa.
In Europe, Volkswagen introduced new Golf and T‑Roc Hybrid models for the French market, priced from €29,990 for the T‑Roc. Both use a 1.5‑litre TSI evo engine paired with two electric motors and a 1.6 kWh battery, delivering a combined 170 hp. The Golf Hybrid accelerates 0‑100 km/h in 7.5 seconds, with fuel consumption of 4.6‑5.1 L/100 km and CO₂ emissions of 104‑117 g/km, while the T‑Roc Hybrid offers similar efficiency.
