Volkswagen unveils Mission Efficiency electric concept car
Volkswagen has unveiled ‘Mission Efficiency’, an electric concept car designed to demonstrate high-efficiency technology based on next-generation mass-production EV platforms. The vehicle achieved three world records related to electric vehicle efficiency, including a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.158, which is among the lowest for road-legal vehicles.
Built on the front-wheel-drive MEB+ platform used for the ID. Polo and ID. Cross, the concept features a 135-horsepower electric motor and a 54.9 kWh high-voltage battery. During a real-world driving test from Wolfsburg, Germany, through Poland and the Czech Republic to Vienna, Austria, the vehicle covered 1,278.36 km on a single charge, maintaining an average energy consumption of 6.89 kWh/100 km.
Key efficiency technologies include an aerodynamic teardrop-shaped body, active air flaps, covered rear wheels, and a fully enclosed underbody. The vehicle also utilizes electromechanical rear brakes to reduce friction and improve regenerative braking, as well as specialized tires co-developed with Continental to minimize rolling resistance. Additionally, a 370W solar panel on the roof can provide up to 30 km of extra range per day depending on weather conditions.
