Volkswagen up! maintains market value despite production end

The Volkswagen up!, a compact hatchback, has maintained a notable presence in the automotive market despite the cessation of its production. Originally launched in late 2011, the model was produced until 2023. Volkswagen decided to end production of the up! and its sister models, the Skoda Citigo and Seat Mii, due to rising manufacturing and development costs. These costs, driven largely by stringent European Union environmental and safety regulations, made small cars less profitable compared to larger models like the Polo.

In the Japanese market, the up! was recognized for its high cost-performance ratio, offering German engineering and safety features—such as ESP and City Emergency Brake—at prices competitive with domestic compact cars. In the European used car market, the up! retains significant value. High-end versions like the electric e-up! and the performance-oriented up! GTI remain popular, with some four-year-old models priced near their original new car costs. Even older models tend to depreciate more slowly than comparable vehicles, reflecting sustained consumer demand.
