Volkswagen worker faces legal consequences after three-minute production halt
The Lower Saxony State Labour Court has upheld a ruling against a Volkswagen employee who unilaterally stopped a production line for three minutes at the Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge plant in Hannover.
In November 2024, Jörn K., a long-term employee and IG Metall union representative, halted the assembly line to address a group of concerned workers. The stoppage occurred amidst rumors regarding mass layoffs, potential plant closures in Germany, and the possible relocation of ID. Buzz production to Poland. The worker intended to pause the line to announce a detailed meeting during a scheduled break.
Volkswagen management issued a formal warning (Abmahnung) to the employee, citing a serious breach of duty. The company noted that unplanned production stoppages can cost several thousand euros per minute. While the employee argued that no net loss in vehicle production occurred due to subsequent catch-up work, the court ruled that the stoppage was not necessary and that the worker did not have the authority to unilaterally decide on production interruptions.
