Volkswagen's 1987 Skoda Favorit Paved Way for Skoda Takeover

The Skoda Favorit, launched in 1987, was the first Czech car to feature a transverse front‑engine and front‑wheel‑drive layout. Designed with the Italian coachbuilder Bertone, its modern, understated styling and improved interior space marked a sharp break from Skoda’s rear‑engine models.

The Favorit demonstrated that Skoda could produce a competitive vehicle for Western markets, convincing Volkswagen to invest in the brand. This investment eventually led to Volkswagen’s acquisition of Skoda, transforming the former state‑run manufacturer into a successful international automaker. Production of the Favorit continued until 1994, cementing its role as a turning point in Central European automotive history.
