Volkswagen's automotive legacy in Brazil: from Polo challenges to Gol GT collector value
Volkswagen's historical presence in the Brazilian market is highlighted through two distinct models: the Polo Hatch 1.0 16V and the classic Gol GT.
Launched in 2002, the Polo Hatch was a technically advanced European model built on the PQ24 platform. Despite its superior safety standards, rigid structure, and modern construction, it struggled to compete with the Volkswagen Gol and Fox. The 1.0 16V EA111 engine, while modern, provided only 9 kgfm of torque, which failed to meet the preferences of Brazilian consumers at the time.
In contrast, the 1984 Volkswagen Gol GT has become a highly valued collector's item. Originally designed to compete with the Ford Escort XR3, the model featured a 1.8 engine, Recaro sport seats, and a distinct aesthetic. A preserved 1984 model with approximately 100,000 kilometers is currently listed for R$ 120,000 in Minas Gerais, a price comparable to a new Volkswagen Tera TSI.
