Volkswagen's Sagunto gigafactory faces delays amid talks with Chinese battery maker Gotion
Chinese battery producer Gotion is negotiating a joint‑venture entry into Volkswagen's battery gigafactory in Sagunto, Spain. Volkswagen has stressed that it will retain control of the plant despite the talks. As the project stalls, Volkswagen replaced the head of its PowerCo battery subsidiary in Spain, naming Ralf Schmid as CEO after Andreas Rottmann's departure.
The Sagunto facility, intended to secure a European supply of battery cells, is now more than two months behind schedule. Delays stem from earlier bureaucratic hurdles, uncertainties over public funding, and recent cost overruns caused by rising material prices linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. A dispute with Korean contractor K‑Ensol, which was responsible for the clean‑room construction, led the company to send workers back to Korea, halting progress. Volkswagen consequently terminated the original construction consortium (Bertolín, Pavasal and Becsa) and assigned urbanisation work to OHLA.
Gotion already holds roughly a quarter of the shares in Volkswagen's PowerCo battery unit, following a €1 billion investment in 2020, and recently announced a €940 million investment in battery development in Valladolid. The ongoing negotiations and delays highlight the challenges of scaling European EV battery production.
