Yevhen Konovalets reinterred with state honors in Kyiv
The remains of Yevhen Konovalets, the first leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), were reinterred with state and military honors at the National Military Memorial Cemetery in Kyiv on August 18. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who described Konovalets as an ‘outstanding son of the nation’ and a ‘distinguished statesman’ who fought for Ukrainian independence.
Konovalets, a colonel in the army of the Ukrainian People's Republic, was assassinated in Rotterdam in 1938 by a Soviet NKVD agent. His remains were exhumed from the Crooswijk cemetery in the Netherlands and transported to Ukraine. The government intends for his remains to eventually be moved to the newly established Ukrainian National Pantheon.
The state-led commemoration has drawn significant attention due to the historical role of the OUN. While Ukrainian officials frame the event as a restoration of ‘historical justice,’ the decision has sparked debate regarding the organization's legacy, particularly concerning its historical activities and its impact on relations with Poland.
