Volos court convicts man for impersonating doctor in real estate scam
A 74-year-old man has been sentenced to six months in prison, with a three-year suspension, for defrauding a civil engineer in Volos, Greece. The perpetrator used a false identity, posing as a well-known doctor, to orchestrate the scam.
The fraud began in July 2021, when the perpetrator contacted a 70-year-old engineer via telephone. He proposed a massive investment project involving the construction of five luxury maisonettes with an estimated value exceeding 100 million euros. To add credibility to the scheme, the man falsely claimed to be collaborating with professors from the University of Oxford.
The engineer was persuaded to transfer 600 euros via electronic banking to secure the cooperation. Following the payment, the perpetrator ceased all communication and disappeared. The victim subsequently reported the incident to the police. The defendant failed to appear at the Volos Single-Member Misdemeanor Court during the trial.
