Volos: Police officer and accomplice sentenced for gas station arson attempt
Two men, aged 22 and 32, have been sentenced to 4 years and 10 months in prison by the Three-Member Misdemeanor Court of Volos for an attempted arson at a gas station on Larissa Avenue. Each defendant was also ordered to pay a fine of 1,200 euros.
The incident occurred in September 2023 when the pair was apprehended by police in the early hours of the morning. They were found in a rental car from Athens, which had its license plates removed. Authorities discovered 80 liters of gasoline in canisters, along with flash grenades, a crowbar, a folding knife, a full-face mask, and a forged identity document.
The 32-year-old defendant was a police officer serving in Athens, who had been placed on leave following his arrest. The 22-year-old defendant failed to appear in court, and an arrest warrant is expected to be issued. The charges included attempted arson, illegal possession of incendiary materials, forgery, and weapons possession.
