Volos marks 82nd anniversary of liberation from German occupation

Commemorations are being held in Volos and Magnesia to mark the 82nd anniversary of the city's liberation from German occupation forces on October 19, 1944.

Magnesia MP Alexandros Meikopoulos issued a statement honoring the National Resistance fighters and those who sacrificed their lives for freedom. He emphasized the responsibility of maintaining historical truth and warned against the resurgence of far-right views, racism, and intolerance in modern public discourse.

The ELAS Magnesia organization also released a statement honoring the contributions of the National Resistance, specifically mentioning EAM, EAM-Labor, EPON, and National Solidarity. The organization highlighted the role of EAM in saving much of the local Jewish community and noted that ELAS forces entered Volos in a celebratory atmosphere following the German withdrawal. The statement underscored the heavy price paid during the occupation, including executions, torture, and looting, calling for the continued defense of democracy and peace.
