Volos political group challenges military use of local port
The political faction ‘Laiki Syspeirosi’ (People’s Rally) has requested a special accountability session with the Volos municipal authorities to discuss the potential use of the city’s port for transporting military equipment and troops to conflict zones.
Aristotelis Rizopoulos, a municipal councilor, raised concerns regarding the port’s strategic importance due to its location along critical energy and commercial routes, such as the EastMed corridor. The group argues that the concentration of industrial and military-related infrastructure in the region, combined with the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, increases security risks for local residents and workers.
In response to an international port strike scheduled for October 30, the faction is calling for the port to remain a facility dedicated to peace and commercial activity rather than serving as a logistical hub for military operations or NATO strategic planning.
