On the morning of 29 July 2026, at about 11:30 a stray dog attacked a six‑year‑old boy in the Agia Aikaterini park in the New Ionian district of Volos, Greece. The dog bit the child's ear, cutting off a fragment, and also bit the child's mother as she tried to shield him. A nearby resident shouted at the animal, frightening it away, and drove the injured mother and child to the local Volos hospital where first‑aid was provided. Because the ear injury was severe, doctors arranged an urgent transfer of the boy to the Agia Sofia Children’s Hospital in Athens for reconstructive surgery, possibly involving a tissue graft. The family, represented by the boy’s grandfather, told ERT that the child, named Marios, is terrified and will soon start first grade. They are demanding that the Volos municipality and other authorities take immediate action on stray‑dog control and have announced plans to pursue legal action for accountability.
