Volotea undergoes restructuring amid rising fuel costs
Low-cost airline Volotea is undergoing a major restructuring to address financial instability caused by rising fuel costs, which have reportedly impacted the company by approximately 150 million euros. The airline is working to ensure its continuity through debt renegotiations and a potential capital increase, a process expected to conclude by December.
As part of the plan, Volotea will reduce its capacity by 20% to 25%. The fleet, originally planned to include 44 aircraft, is expected to be reduced to between 30 and 35 units. The company also faces significant operational changes, including the potential closure of bases in Brest, Naples, and Palermo, and a reduction in activity at French airports such as Bordeaux and Lyon.
Employment will be affected, with approximately 50 layoffs planned for the company’s operational headquarters in Barcelona and up to 300 employees facing uncertainty regarding their future roles. The airline's financial struggles follow a period where it reported a loss of 64.3 million euros in 2025, despite a slight increase in revenue.
