VOLT secures first customer for Rotterdam AI gigafactory
The AI infrastructure company VOLT has secured its first customer, the Amsterdam-based cloud provider Nebius, for its planned AI gigafactory in the Port of Rotterdam. The agreement involves Nebius renting computing power from the facility for a multi-year period.
VOLT intends to begin construction in 2028, with an estimated investment of 7 billion euros for the first phase. This budget includes 2.5 billion euros for buildings and 4.5 billion euros for AI chip infrastructure. The project aims to mitigate power grid strain by locating the facility at the Maasvlakte, allowing it to draw electricity directly from offshore wind farms.
In a separate development, the Croatian electric vehicle manufacturer Rimac is also expanding into the AI sector. Rimac is partnering with Ecoblox to build modular mobile data centers (MDCs). The company will utilize its 'UNI battery modules'—originally developed for the Rimac Nevera—to provide scalable, high-capacity energy storage and backup power for these AI infrastructures.
