Volta B1 quantum computer inaugurated in Como
Italy has officially inaugurated Volta B1, the country’s first quantum computer based on quantum annealing technology. Located in Como, the system is the Advantage2 model developed by the American company D-Wave, featuring a sixth-generation Zephyr processor with over 4,400 qubits and 20-way connectivity.
Financed by Swiss Quantum Technology (SQT) through a 10 million euro agreement, Volta B1 is the most powerful quantum annealing system in Italy and the second most powerful in Europe, following Germany’s system in Jülich. Alessio Butti, Undersecretary for Technological Innovation, stated that the machine represents a historic turning point for the national scientific landscape and aligns with the Italian Strategy for Quantum Technologies.
To ensure broad accessibility, a portion of the computer's capacity will be provided free of charge to universities, research institutions, and state agencies.
