La Guaira faces massive reconstruction efforts after deadly earthquakes

Following the double earthquakes of June 24, which registered magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, Venezuela is grappling with massive destruction, particularly in the state of La Guaira. The death toll has reached 6,301, according to parliamentary president Jorge Rodríguez. Over 53,000 homes have been evaluated, with approximately 9,567 classified as being at high risk.

In response to the environmental and sanitary crisis, hundreds of volunteers organized by the Fundación Sonrisa de Ángel and the Fuerza Azul project have conducted cleanup operations in coastal areas like Caraballeda to reduce contamination and prevent infections. Meanwhile, local construction workers have raised concerns regarding their exclusion from reconstruction efforts, alleging that the government is prioritizing military and external personnel over local skilled labor.

Economic recovery remains a significant challenge. The World Bank estimates direct physical damages at $19.6 billion, warning that a slow reconstruction process could hinder the nation's economic recovery for a decade. In the tourism sector, workers in Macuto are attempting to reactivate beach services to support local families, despite damaged infrastructure such as bathrooms and showers.
