Italy environmental volunteers conduct widespread cleanups

Across various regions in Italy, numerous volunteer-led initiatives have been organized to combat environmental degradation and promote civic responsibility. Many of these actions coincide with World Cleanup Day and campaigns such as Legambiente’s ‘Puliamo il Mondo’.

In urban areas like Campobasso, Bari, and Padova, volunteers and community groups have focused on collecting litter from streets, shopping districts, and public squares. These efforts often target small waste like cigarette butts and plastic, but have also uncovered larger items such as furniture and electronics. In Campobasso, a specific initiative also addressed the collection of small electronic waste (RAEE).

Coastal and aquatic environments have also seen significant activity. Volunteers in Catanzaro, Sorrento, and Stalettì have cleaned beaches, while others used kayaks and SUPs in the Portofino Marine Protected Area to collect waste from the sea. On Lake Garda, the Gardaland Sea Life team participated in a global 24-hour cleanup. Additionally, scientific projects like REEForest Life are working to restore Mediterranean marine ecosystems by replanting algae forests.

Beyond immediate cleaning, organizations like the WWF are promoting ‘Urban Nature’ festivals to encourage the integration of greenery into cities to improve climate resilience and public health.
