Volvo 1800S sets world record with 5.2 million kilometers driven

A 1966 Volvo 1800S has set a Guinness World Record for the highest mileage driven by a single owner. The red vehicle, owned by Irv Gordon of Long Island, covered a total of 3,260,257 miles, which is approximately 5.25 million kilometers.

Gordon purchased the car in June 1966 for $4,150 and drove it continuously until his death in 2018. The car was powered by a 1.8-liter B18 four-cylinder gasoline engine. While the engine remained the original unit throughout the car's life, Volvo records indicate it underwent two major rebuilds to maintain its performance, the first occurring after roughly 1.09 million kilometers.

Spanish mechanic Juan José Ebenezer highlighted the vehicle as an example of extreme engine durability, stating, “Volvo has the best engine in the world.” Ebenezer noted that while diesel engines are typically associated with high mileage, this gasoline engine proved exceptionally robust due to its simple and sturdy construction.
