Volvo Cars enhances safety with new connected alerts and digital coach

Volvo Cars is expanding its connected safety technology and driver assistance features through new software updates and digital tools.

A new over-the-air software update for models including the EX60, EX90, and ES90 introduces four real-time road hazard alerts: large animal detection, vulnerable user alerts (pedestrians and cyclists), roadwork notifications, and accident warnings. This technology allows vehicles to share hazard information with other drivers in real time, a capability that can also be shared with other car brands and traffic management centers via the European Data for Road Safety ecosystem.

Additionally, Volvo is launching ‘Safety Coach,’ a digital assistant developed with Cambridge Mobile Telematics. The app analyzes driving habits such as braking, acceleration, and cornering to provide a personalized safety score. Initially rolling out in Sweden and Norway for compatible models from 2020 onwards, the program allows drivers to share data with insurance providers to potentially access lower premiums. Volvo plans to expand the Safety Coach service to the US and other European markets in the future.
