Volvo expands connected safety technology for electric vehicles

Volvo Cars is expanding its connected safety ecosystem through new over-the-air software updates for its electric models, including the EX90, ES90, and EX60. The system enables vehicles to share real-time data regarding road hazards directly with one another, rather than relying on manual user reports from apps like Google Maps.

The new technology provides four specific categories of real-time alerts: large animals on or near the road, vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists, roadworks, and traffic accidents. When a connected Volvo detects a risk, the location data is sent to servers and relayed to other vehicles on the same route.

Volvo has reached a milestone of 1 million vehicles equipped with connected safety technology. To increase the impact of these safety features, the company is sharing data with traffic management centers and other manufacturers through the European 'Data for Road Safety' initiative. Additionally, the EX90 will support spatial audio for Apple CarPlay users to enhance the in-cabin experience.
