Volvo patents new technology for electric vehicle energy efficiency

Volvo has patented a new technology aimed at fundamentally changing how electric vehicles manage energy consumption. The innovation focuses on a ‘direct drive’ concept that allows the electric motor to operate directly with the battery, potentially eliminating the need for inverters.

In current electric propulsion systems, inverters are used to convert direct current (DC) from the battery into the alternating current (AC) required by the motor. This conversion process typically results in energy loss. By removing this step, Volvo aims to reduce energy loss, decrease system complexity, and lower production and maintenance costs. Additionally, the technology could optimize regenerative braking systems, leading to increased vehicle range and improved efficiency.
