Volvo Trucks unveils D13 engine platform for sustainable fuels

Volvo Trucks has unveiled its new D13 engine platform, a 13-liter engine family designed for global markets to meet diverse emission standards and support sustainable fuels, including biodiesel. Developed since 2021 by an international team of engineers primarily based in Gothenburg, Sweden, the platform features technical upgrades such as a variable geometry turbocharger, increased cylinder pressure, and optimized compression ratios. These improvements aim to enhance combustion and fuel efficiency by approximately 2%.

The development comes as biodiesel gains traction in the heavy transport sector. While Europe drives demand through strict emission regulations, Brazil is moving to regulate the use of biofuels in the maritime sector. The D13 platform is designed to be adaptable, allowing manufacturers to utilize existing infrastructure by mixing renewable fuels with fossil diesel.
