Volvo Cars and NVIDIA expand partnership for automated driving

Volvo Cars and NVIDIA have announced an expanded partnership to develop advanced automated driving systems. Building on a collaboration that began in 2017, the companies aim to introduce Level 2++ driving capabilities that allow for gradual “eyes-off and mind-off” driving. The technology is designed to handle complex real-world scenarios, including highways, busy urban streets, and parking maneuvers.

The new driving stack will integrate three core NVIDIA technologies: the Hyperion sensor and compute architecture, the Alpamayo autonomous-driving software stack, and the Halos safety evaluation layer. Volvo intends to combine these AI-driven tools with its own vehicle safety engineering and proprietary driver-understanding systems.

This technology is expected to debut in a next-generation Volvo model before the end of the decade. Unlike previous initiatives limited to specific segments, Volvo plans to roll out this technology across its entire lineup, including electric, hybrid, and gasoline-powered vehicles. The goal is to provide a seamless, point-to-point driving experience from origin to destination.
