Vonovia signals investment shifts in Berlin amid political uncertainty

Real estate giant Vonovia is signaling potential shifts in its investment strategy for Berlin due to political uncertainty. Amid discussions regarding the socialization of large housing companies by the Die Linke party, CEO Luka Mucic stated that the company requires greater clarity for new projects. While Vonovia does not plan a complete withdrawal from the city and will complete its current 1,000 apartment construction projects, Berlin is expected to have a smaller presence in the company's future project pipeline.

Vonovia intends to continue investing in the maintenance and energetic modernization of its existing stock, which includes approximately 130,000 apartments in the capital. However, the company warned that political instability could hinder new construction and investments.

Tensions have also surfaced between the company and political actors. A planned meeting between Mucic and Die Linke leader Luigi Pantisano was canceled following a dispute over whether a journalist could attend the discussion. Meanwhile, analysts at Goldman Sachs and ODDO BHF have lowered their price targets for Vonovia's stock.
