Évora City Council Seeks Quick Resolution for Travessa da Palmeira Wall

The Évora municipal council is intensifying efforts to resolve a long‑standing impasse over the wall on Travessa da Palmeira in the city's historic centre. Councilor for Heritage Carmen Carvalheira met with the city's legal, heritage and archaeology services to prepare a wider consultation with all involved parties, scheduled for the following day.

The wall, part of the Hotel da Cartuxa, collapsed during partial demolition work aimed at removing an unsafe section. A court decision has ordered the owner to rebuild the wall, but the ruling has not yet become final. Municipal officials argue the demolished wall lacks sufficient historic value to warrant full reconstruction, while other experts advocate its restoration. The council aims to reach a consensual, swift solution that protects public interest, preserves heritage, and restores urban dignity to the area.
