Évora hospital oncologist resigns amid negligence allegations

An oncologist at the Hospital do Espírito Santo de Évora (HESE) has resigned following allegations of medical negligence. The resignation is set to take effect on September 30.

The case stems from the death of a 64-year-old patient with oropharyngeal cancer, who passed away in the hospital's emergency department on July 15. The patient's family has alleged gross negligence by the oncologist.

The Unidade Local de Saúde do Alentejo Central (ULSAC) confirmed it has opened an internal investigation to “rigorously and impartially determine the circumstances related to the care provided to the patient.” While the investigation is ongoing, the ULSAC stated it is working with as much speed as possible. The victim's son, André Coelho, indicated that the family is awaiting the results of the hospital's inquiry as well as investigations being conducted by other entities.
