Évora hosts ceremonies to transfer remains of Timorese clergy

The city of Évora, Portugal, hosted ceremonies between August 17 and 19 to honor and transfer the remains of three significant Timorese ecclesiastical figures. The prelates being honored are Jaime Garcia Goulart, the first Bishop of Dili; José Joaquim Ribeiro, the second Bishop of Dili; and Monsenhor Martinho da Costa Lopes, a former Apostolic Administrator and human rights defender.

The ceremonies included religious, cultural, and academic events organized through cooperation between the Government of Timor-Leste, the Archdiocese of Évora, and the Episcopal Conference of Timor-Leste. Key events included a Solemn Eucharist at the Sé Catedral of Évora, presided over by the Apostolic Nuncio in Portugal, Andrés Carrascosa Coso, and a welcoming mass at the Church of the Holy Spirit.

The remains will be returned to Timor-Leste to be interred in the Cathedral of Dili. The tributes highlighted the historical and spiritual impact these figures had on the growth of the Catholic Church and the people of Timor-Leste.
