Évora hosts theatrical performance on Portuguese and Romanian authoritarian history

The Salão Central in Évora will host the theatrical performance ‘InBetween Memory. A Romania-Portugal Residency’ on Friday, September 25. The production is the result of an artistic residency organized by ExQuorum in partnership with Romania’s Teatro Nacional Aureliu Manea de Turda.

Integrated into the NovosCiclos 2026 event, the play creates a dialogue between two 20th-century historical experiences: the Estado Novo regime in Portugal and the communist regime in Romania. Supported by the Romanian Cultural Institute’s Cantemir Program, the project uses historical research and personal memories to explore how authoritarian regimes impact different generations.

Through fiction, the narrative follows two families—one Portuguese and one Romanian—over several decades. The performance utilizes collective creation, documentary theater, and improvisation to examine how political contexts influence daily life, family relationships, and identity. Themes include political violence, ideological pressure, migration, and survival strategies.
