Évora inaugurates IP2 Variante Nascente to reduce urban traffic

The new Variante Nascente of the IP2 highway has been inaugurated in Évora, Portugal. The 12.8-kilometer stretch connects the Évora Nascente node of the A6 motorway to the EN18 road in the São Manços area.

Local officials estimate the new infrastructure will reduce vehicle traffic within Évora's urban center by 30% to 40%, specifically impacting heavy vehicle circulation. This diversion is expected to improve road safety, mobility, and environmental conditions by reducing emissions within the city. The project, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) with an investment of 54.9 million euros, features a dual-carriageway profile.

While the opening was welcomed, the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) issued a statement claiming the IP2 remains incomplete. The party highlighted that a specific section between the new Variante Nascente and the São Manços branch has been abandoned since works were suspended in 2011, calling on the government to finish the remaining stretches.
