Évora municipal assembly unveils urban plan for 7,000 new homes and 15,000 new residents

The Évora City Council presented the fourth revision of its Urban Development Plan, outlining the construction of more than 7,000 housing units and capacity for about 15,000 additional residents. The plan also earmarks roughly 90 hectares for economic expansion, including an industrial and technology park, a new business area, and a logistics hub near the railway line. A health cluster covering 42 hectares will be built close to the future central hospital of Alentejo, integrating the university's health pole.

The proposal, prepared by a multidisciplinary team led by Professor Jorge Carvalho, was discussed publicly on 26 June 2026 at the municipal assembly. After the session, the plan will undergo review by the Alentejo Regional Coordination and Development Commission before a formal public consultation and final municipal approval slated for September. Key measures include flexible residential zoning, promotion of public transport, dedicated corridors for non‑motorised travel, and preservation of Évora’s historic landscape.
