Évora municipal pools closed after detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

The municipality of Évora temporarily shut its public swimming pools after laboratory tests detected traces of the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Officials described the closure as a strictly precautionary measure aimed at eliminating any potential risk to users. A new round of water samples will be collected, with results expected within about 48 hours. If the follow‑up analysis confirms the absence of the bacterium and the water meets quality standards, the pools could be reopened.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a mandatory‑reporting pathogen in Portugal and classified by the World Health Organization as a serious health threat because it can cause severe infections of the lungs, ears, urinary tract, skin and other tissues, and it is resistant to many antibiotics.
