Évora municipal pools shut after detection of Pseudomonas bacteria

The municipal swimming pools in Évora were closed to the public after routine water‑quality tests identified traces of the bacterium **Pseudomonas aeruginosa**. The city council said the precautionary closure was made to protect public health while corrective cleaning measures are carried out.

A new round of water samples will be taken on Monday, with results expected within 48 hours. If the follow‑up tests confirm the absence of the bacterium and water quality meets safety standards, the pools may be reopened. The council apologized for the inconvenience and emphasized that safeguarding public health remains a top priority. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, commonly found in soil and wet environments, can cause infections ranging from mild ear infections to serious lung or pneumonia cases.
