Vorarlberg authorities issue fines for summer school truancy

Authorities in Vorarlberg are pursuing administrative penalties against 13 families due to student truancy during summer school. Although the two-week summer school program concluded approximately three weeks ago, the legal process regarding unexcused absences is ongoing.

Under regional laws, summer school attendance is mandatory, regardless of whether a student was required to attend or enrolled voluntarily. If a student is absent for more than three days without a valid excuse, authorities can file a report. Herbert Burtscher, a spokesperson for the district authorities, confirmed that 13 such cases are currently being processed across the four district administrations.

Parents facing these charges will receive a penalty order through an expedited procedure. Fines for these violations range from 150 to 800 euros. Parents have two weeks from the receipt of the order to file an objection, which would trigger a formal administrative penalty proceeding. During such a proceeding, authorities will examine evidence to determine if the absence was justified by reasons such as illness, extraordinary circumstances, or prior permission from school management.
