Vorarlberg debt levels rise as political dispute emerges in Hard
Public debt in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg has reached its highest level in the country, with per capita debt rising approximately 17 percent from 4,290 Euro to 5,120 Euro, according to Statistik Austria.
In the municipality of Hard, Mayor Martin Staudinger reported a more controlled increase, with per capita debt rising by roughly 6 percent to 2,460 Euro. The municipality stated that its long-term debt of 33.9 million Euro is being used for essential infrastructure, including childcare facilities, fiber networks, water systems, and regional heating. Hard maintains that its total assets of 160.75 million Euro significantly exceed its current debt.
However, the opposition faction 'Zukunft Hard' has challenged these figures, accusing the Mayor of presenting an incomplete financial picture. Vice Mayor René Bickel argued that the Mayor's calculations omit 50.67 million Euro in debt held by outsourced companies. According to the opposition, when these liabilities are included, the actual per capita debt in Hard stands at 3,715 Euro rather than the reported 2,460 Euro.
