Vorarlberg faces extreme heat and severe drought
The Austrian state of Vorarlberg has experienced extreme weather conditions characterized by record-breaking heat and severe drought. In Bludenz, 55 heat days were recorded, while Bregenz saw 49 days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. September was particularly dry, with rainfall levels approximately 70 percent below the long-term average, making Vorarlberg the driest region in Austria for that month.
The lack of precipitation has led to significant environmental and infrastructural challenges. Lake Constance reached a record low water level for the end of September, measuring 256 centimeters. Groundwater levels have also hit historic minimums at a quarter of the state's monitoring stations.
Forestry experts report that soil water reserves are nearly exhausted, causing trees to shed leaves early to conserve moisture and leading to high failure rates in spring reforestation efforts. To mitigate water supply risks, the state has expanded its emergency interconnection network, with 60 percent of water providers now part of such systems, up from 30 percent in 2009.
