Vorarlberg faces shortage of 500 truck drivers

The transport sector in Vorarlberg, Austria, is facing a significant shortage of truck drivers, with approximately 500 positions currently vacant in the region. Michael Zimmermann, head of the transport and traffic group at the Chamber of Commerce, noted that the shortage extends across Austria, where thousands of drivers are needed.

The crisis is expected to intensify due to upcoming retirements and job transitions. This shortage impacts not only individual logistics companies but the broader Vorarlberg economy by affecting transport and supply chains.

Challenges in recruitment include a lack of interest among young people in professional driver apprenticeships, as the perceived attractiveness of the role has declined. To address the deficit, industry experts suggest recruiting workers from outside the European Union, noting that other EU nations like Slovenia and Hungary face fewer difficulties in filling these roles.
