Vorarlberg implements digital customs for automated truck border crossings

The Austrian Ministry of Finance has implemented a digital customs system in Vorarlberg to streamline commercial freight transport at the borders with Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Through the ‘Smart Border Austria’ initiative, customs procedures are being digitized to allow trucks to pass through border crossings with minimal human intervention.

Under the new system, drivers complete electronic pre-notifications containing customs information and vehicle license plates. At the border, cameras scan the plates and match them against the pre-registered data. If the information is correct, drivers can proceed automatically; those requiring inspection are directed to separate control areas. The Ministry aims for 95 percent of border crossings to be fully automated, reducing the workload for customs personnel and easing traffic congestion.

Digitalization has already been completed at the Tisis, Höchst, Mäder, Lustenau, and Meiningen customs points. The process at Hohenems is scheduled for completion by September 8. This transition significantly reduces the need for drivers to visit the Wolfurt customs office to obtain physical documentation, which is expected to alleviate traffic jams near the Dornbirn Nord motorway exit. Approximately 6,000 commercial vehicles pass through these border points daily.
