Vorarlberg implements water infrastructure projects following drought

A drought during the summer of 2026 strained drinking water resources in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg. In nine municipalities—Egg, Eichenberg, Möggers, Lochau, Ludesch, Nüziders, Übersaxen, Schwarzach, and Zwischenwasser—local sources were insufficient to meet demand. Water supply in these areas was maintained through existing connection lines from neighboring municipalities or the installation of temporary lines.

While most of the Vorarlberg population is protected by interconnected water networks, approximately 4% of residents live in areas dependent solely on local sources. Nine municipalities, including Blons, Bürserberg, Dalaas, Damüls, Fontanella, Satteins, Sibratsgfäll, Silbertal, and Sonntag, currently lack alternative connection lines to neighboring communities. This leaves them vulnerable to supply failures or significant reductions during prolonged dry periods.

To mitigate these risks, infrastructure investments are underway. The Mittlerer Walgau drinking water network, which began construction in the autumn of 2025, aims to connect Bludesch, Düns, Dünserberg, Röns, Schlins, and Schnifis. Large-scale projects are also planned for the Bregenzerwald region to strengthen future water security.
