Vorarlberg records lowest per capita municipal waste in Austria

Data from the Austrian Environment Agency reveals that Vorarlberg produces the lowest amount of municipal waste per capita in Austria, averaging 403 kilograms per person annually. This is significantly lower than other regions, such as Burgenland, which records 590 kilograms per capita, and Tyrol, with 561 kilograms.

However, Vorarlberg ranks second to last in the separate collection of recyclable materials, known as 'altstoffe' (paper, glass, metal, etc.). Residents in Vorarlberg collect 152 kilograms of these materials per capita, trailing behind Tyrol, which leads the country with 218 kilograms per capita. Vienna records the lowest separate collection rate at 103 kilograms per person.

Nationwide, Austrian households collect approximately 1.5 million tons of recyclable materials and generate about 1.5 million tons of residual waste. Total municipal waste from households across the country exceeds 4.6 million tons.
