Vorizia: Legal proceedings advance in Crete homicide case

The judicial investigation into the fatal incident in Vorizia, Crete, is entering its final stages. Following the completion of the primary interrogation, the case file is being transferred to the Misdemeanor Prosecutor, who will submit a proposal to the Judicial Council regarding the referral of defendants to trial.

The investigation encompasses the central homicide case as well as the detonation of an explosive device at the home of a member of the Fragkiadakis family. Due to the related nature of these incidents, authorities are considering a joint trial. Seven defendants, including five from the Fragkiadakis family and two from the Kargakis family, remain in custody in correctional facilities outside of Crete.

To meet constitutional deadlines, the trial must be completed within an 18-month limit. A referral decree and a specific trial date are expected to be issued by late December 2024 or early January 2027. Meanwhile, the community recently held a memorial service for Fanouri Kargakis under heavy police security to prevent local tension.
