Voter engagement and political participation perspectives
Discussions regarding the efficacy and nature of voting highlight diverse approaches to political engagement. In Malaysia, the 2018 general election demonstrated the potential for votes to trigger historic political shifts by removing long-standing governments. However, subsequent political developments have prompted debates regarding the limitations of electoral politics and the necessity of grassroots organizing, such as trade unions and community movements, to achieve lasting change between election cycles.
In a different context of political participation, Brady Rogers, a former robotics engineer and small business owner in Kelowna, British Columbia, successfully campaigned for a seat on the Kelowna City Council. Rogers utilized an unconventional strategy by openly admitting his lack of political interest and qualifications, using slogans such as “I barely want to do this” to distinguish himself from other candidates. His campaign gained significant attention and ultimately resulted in a successful election bid.
