Voter registration methods and same-day availability in the US

Voter registration in the United States can be completed online, by mail, or in person. Citizens are encouraged to verify their registration status and update information regarding name changes, address changes, or party affiliation to ensure their votes are counted.

As of October 2026, twenty-four states and Washington, D.C., permit some form of same-day registration (SDR). This allows eligible residents to register and vote during the same visit, though the specific timing and locations vary by state. Some states offer SDR during early voting periods, while others allow it on Election Day at designated sites. North Dakota is unique in that it does not require voter registration at all.
