Voters in Ontario using AI chatbots for election information

Some voters in Ontario are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence chatbots to research candidates and policies for upcoming municipal elections. In Toronto’s Parkdale-High Park ward, where a retiring councillor has led to a crowded field of ten candidates, voters have used tools like Anthropic’s Claude to summarize candidate stances on issues such as housing, property taxes, and bike lanes.

However, experts express concern regarding the accuracy of this information. During a recent provincial election in Quebec, researchers from McGill University estimated that approximately 40 per cent of voters who used AI chatbots received false or outdated election data. This discrepancy is partly attributed to many news outlets blocking chatbots from accessing their websites, preventing the models from mining current journalistic reports.

Academic experts note that these tools may have significant blind spots, particularly regarding candidates with a limited online presence or less media coverage. There are growing concerns that reliance on algorithms could undermine the democratic process by replacing human judgment and verified reporting with potentially biased or incorrect information.
