Vox appeals construction license for Sevilla Islamic center

The political party Vox has filed an appeal against the construction license granted by the Sevilla City Council for a project known as the Sevilla Islamic Cultural Center in the Polígono Sur neighborhood. The license, issued by the Urbanism Commission on July 28, 2026, allows for the construction of a three-story building with a basement and a 30-meter minaret.

Vox is requesting that the license be declared null and void, seeking an immediate precautionary suspension of all works until a final resolution is reached. The party argues there is a contradiction between the project’s designation as a cultural center and its material configuration, which they claim functions as a religious place of worship.

The proposed facility by the Fundación Mezquita includes prayer rooms for men and women, ablution areas, an imam's area, a courtyard, a library, classrooms, and community housing, among other amenities. The dispute highlights ongoing tension between the People's Party (PP) administration led by Mayor José Luis Sanz and Vox regarding urban planning and the nature of the development.
