Vox claims Democratic Memory Law risks electoral census manipulation

The political party Vox has raised concerns regarding the impact of the Democratic Memory Law, specifically the provisions often referred to as the ‘Grandchildren’s Law,’ on the Spanish electoral census.

In Torrent, the local Vox group filed a motion to reject what they describe as attempts to manipulate the electoral census through administrative instructions that have expanded access to Spanish nationality to descendants of Spaniards. Spokesperson María Fernández argued that the law is being used as a political instrument to favor the current government's electoral prospects, noting a significant discrepancy between historical exile estimates and the over two million people seeking nationality.

In Castilla y León, Vox parliamentary group leader Carlos Pollán identified five provinces—Ávila, Palencia, Salamanca, Soria, and Zamora—as being at “maximum risk” of electoral census manipulation. The party highlighted that in 161 Spanish municipalities, the number of voters registered abroad exceeds the number of local residents. Specifically, in Salamanca, the foreign census accounts for 12 percent of the electorate, compared to a national average of 7 percent.
