Spain faces elderly care shortages and housing challenges

Various Spanish municipalities are facing challenges regarding elderly care and housing. In Vigo, the demand for residential care for the elderly has reached an unsustainable level. Out of 2,015 available places in the city, only about twenty are currently available, all within the private sector. Public facilities are entirely occupied, leading to hospital patients remaining in geriatric wards for up to two months while waiting for placement.

In Marbella, local representatives have warned of a looming crisis where current housing difficulties for young people will impact future elderly care. The lack of property ownership and high rental costs for the younger generation may leave them unable to afford residential care in retirement.

Meanwhile, in San Vicente de la Barquera, local leadership is focusing on managing the impact of high tourism volumes on municipal services and addressing housing as a primary project for the current legislature.
