Vox pushes national‑priority housing motion in Spanish Congress

The far‑right party Vox is set to table a motion in the Congress of Deputies that would apply a "national priority" principle to the acquisition, rental and allocation of housing in Spain. The proposal seeks to guarantee that Spanish citizens are given precedence over migrants in the housing market and calls for stricter migration controls, including the repatriation of undocumented migrants and deportation of those who commit crimes or are seen as challenging "Western culture". Vox also suggests a differentiated fiscal regime that favours Spanish individuals and companies.

The move comes as the People's Party (PP) negotiates a coalition government in Andalusia with Vox. While the PP has previously voted against a similar priority‑national initiative in the health system, it now faces pressure to define its stance on the housing proposal. Vox’s leaders have used the debate to force the PP to take a position ahead of the formation of the regional government.

The proposal has attracted criticism from other political actors and civil society, who argue it discriminates against migrants and conflicts with European Union principles. The motion is expected to be debated in the coming week but faces an uncertain prospect of approval.
