Voyager 1 to reach one light-day distance from Earth in November 2026
NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft is projected to reach a historic cosmic milestone on November 18, 2026, when it hits a distance of one light-day from Earth. This distance, equivalent to approximately 25.9 billion kilometers, represents the distance light travels in a 24-hour period.
As the most distant human-made object in the universe, the probe's position will create a significant communication delay. A radio signal sent from Earth will take a full day to reach the spacecraft, and a response will take another day to return, resulting in a 48-hour round-trip communication window.
Launched in 1977 to study Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 1 has since transitioned into interstellar space, having exited the heliosphere in 2012. Despite its age and technical challenges, the mission continues to provide data on particles, magnetic fields, and plasma in regions of space never before explored by human technology.
